About the role
Position Overview
The BAS Design Engineer develops, engineers, and documents building automation control solutions for commercial, industrial, and mission‑critical facilities. This role transforms project requirements, mechanical plans, and sequences of operation into fully constructible BAS designs, including control drawings, network architecture, device layouts, and engineered submittal packages. The engineer collaborates with project managers, MEP engineers, contractors, and field technicians to ensure accurate installation, commissioning, and long‑term system performance.
Design & Engineering
- Analyze building requirements and occupants need to determine automation strategies.
- Develop complete BAS designs including control schematics, riser diagrams, wiring diagrams, network architecture, and device/sensor layouts.
- Size and select valves, actuators, sensors, and DDC components based on mechanical system requirements.
- Author, validate, and refine HVAC Sequences of Operation (SOO) to ensure proper system functionality.
- Produce Bills of Materials (BOMs), point lists, I/O schedules, and installation notes.
- Ensure designs comply with project specifications, energy codes, safety standards, and industry best practices.
Technical Documentation & Submittals
- Create complete BAS/ATC submittal packages based on plans, addenda, and job specifications.
- Maintain “as‑built” documentation and update drawings based on RFIs, field feedback, and design changes.
- Keep detailed records of design decisions, wiring diagrams, and software configurations.
Collaboration & Coordination
- Work closely with MEP engineers, contractors, equipment manufacturers, project managers, and field technicians.
- Participate in design reviews, coordination meetings, and value‑engineering discussions.
- Support construction, startup, commissioning, and integration with EPMS, DCIM, and other systems.
Quality, Standards & Continuous Improvement
- Apply and maintain company design standards, Visio standards, and naming conventions.
- Recommend new products and approaches to improve system performance and value.
- Contribute to engineering standards libraries and best‑practice documentation.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Strong technical and problem‑solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Visio and BAS drafting/documentation tools.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interpret mechanical plans, specifications, and sequences of operation.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and lead large design packages.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field experience
- 3–5+ years of experience in BAS or HVAC controls design.
- Experience with mechanical systems including RTUs, VAVs, AHUs, DOAS, hydronic systems, chiller plants, cooling towers, and boiler plants.
- Familiarity with networking, IT coordination, and third‑party integrations.
- Tridium Niagara experience or certification is preferred.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Three years of relevant Desing Engineer Experience required
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with computers, phones, and office equipment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- High attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.
- Ability to manage projects from development through implementation and evaluation.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications and Visio.
- Knowledge of building automation systems, HVAC systems, building construction, and contracting.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times

Working Conditions
Must have the ability to perform the duties above in a non-controlled environment. This will include climbing ladders, working on ladders and elevated surfaces, maintain in good working conditions, tools, materials, and equipment required to your work area. Working exposed to the elements during (when required) at all times of the year. All employees are required to always wear PPE and always follow Safety procedures.
