Field Engineer - AV Integration

Kontek Systems is an employee-owned (ESOP) commercial AV integration firm in downtown Durham, NC. We design, install, and support audiovisual systems for corporate, education, healthcare, and public-sector clients across the Southeast, and because we’re employee-owned, the people doing the work share in the results.

We’re hiring a Field Engineer to be the technical bridge between a strong system design and an audiovisual solution that performs successfully in the real world.

This role is ideal for an experienced commercial AV professional who enjoys working across multiple technologies, troubleshooting challenging issues, and taking ownership of systems through testing, commissioning, and final project closeout. You will work closely with project managers, design engineers, programmers, installation teams, and customers to identify issues, implement solutions, and ensure each system meets Kontek’s standards for performance, reliability, and quality.

What You’ll Do

• Review project designs and documentation for completeness and accuracy.
• Manage assigned responsibilities within established project schedules.
• Terminate, test, and troubleshoot cabling as required.
• Load and verify configuration files for AV devices.
• Configure AV devices residing on customer and project networks.
• Update and maintain project IP-addressing information.
• Test audio DSP programming for system functionality.
• Test integrated systems and troubleshoot or implement corrective action as required.
• Coordinate with the programming team regarding updates and revisions.
• Complete commissioning and quality-control checklists.
• Provide engineering and DSP support to project installation teams.
• Provide technical oversight during in-house and on-site system commissioning.
• Provide regular project updates to the Project Manager and Design Engineer.
• Prepare project punch lists and submit them to the Project Manager.
• Review field redline drawings and submit them to the Design Engineer at project completion.

What Success Looks Like

• AV systems are thoroughly tested, commissioned, and delivered to Kontek’s quality standards.
• Technical issues are identified early, communicated clearly, and resolved without unnecessary project delays.
• Device configurations, DSP functionality, network connectivity, and integrated system performance are verified before turnover.
• Project managers, designers, programmers, and installation teams receive timely and accurate technical updates.
• Punch lists, commissioning documentation, and field redlines are completed accurately and on time.
• Customers receive reliable systems that perform as designed and are ready for successful use.

What We’re Looking For

• Four or more years of commercial AV experience.
• Strong understanding of commercial AV technology and integrated systems.
• Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
• Experience troubleshooting networks and switch configurations.
• Proficiency loading, testing, and editing files from manufacturers such as Crestron, Extron, Biamp, Q-SYS, and similar platforms.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work with urgency while maintaining quality and professionalism.
• Two- or four-year degree in a relevant field.
• CTS certification or ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire.
• Network+ certification or ability to obtain it within the first 12 months.
• OSHA 30 construction-safety training.

Preferred Qualifications

• AV programming experience.
• CTS-I or CTS-D certification.
• Experience testing and troubleshooting DSP programming.
• Experience commissioning complex commercial AV systems.

Physical and Work Requirements

• Ability to stand and sit for extended periods.
• Ability to bend, lift, and crouch.
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to use a computer and technical equipment for extended periods.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to customer and project sites.

Pay: $72,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
