Junior Structural Steel Drafter

Job Summary

The Junior Structural Steel Drafter is responsible for preparing, revising, and maintaining structural steel detail drawings and fabrication documentation in support of structural engineering projects. The role involves working closely with senior drafters, structural engineers, and project teams to develop accurate connection details, shop drawings, and erection plans, while ensuring compliance with company standards, AISC specifications, and applicable building codes. This is an entry-level position offering hands-on training and mentorship in structural steel detailing.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare structural steel shop drawings, erection plans, and connection details using CAD/detailing software under the guidance of senior drafters or engineers.
• Assist in developing and maintaining fabrication and erection drawing packages for structural steel projects.
• Support senior drafters and engineers in detailing beams, columns, connections, and miscellaneous steel components.
• Review engineering drawings, sketches, and specifications to produce accurate steel detail drawings.
• Revise and update drawings based on engineering changes, RFIs, and project requirements.
• Ensure drawings comply with company standards, AISC/AWS codes, and project specifications.
• Coordinate with engineers, senior drafters, and project managers to resolve basic design and drafting questions.
• Maintain drawing registers, document control records, and revision histories.
• Assist in preparing bill of materials (BOMs), material take-offs, and supporting documentation.
• Support fabrication shop and erection teams by providing accurate drawing information.
• Participate in design reviews and quality checks under supervisor guidance.
• Perform other drafting and detailing support duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

• Diploma, Associate Degree, or Technical Certification in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Structural Detailing, or a related field.
• 0–2 years of experience in structural steel drafting or detailing (internships/coursework projects considered).
• Basic proficiency in Tekla Structures, AutoCAD, or similar structural detailing software.
• Basic understanding of structural steel drawing standards, symbols, and connection types.
• Ability to interpret structural engineering drawings, sketches, and specifications with support from senior staff.
• Good communication and teamwork skills, with willingness to learn from senior drafters and engineers.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
• Eagerness to learn AISC standards and structural steel fabrication/erection processes.

Preferred Skills

• Coursework or exposure to structural steel detailing, connection design, or steel fabrication processes.
• Familiarity with Tekla Structures or other BIM/detailing software.
• Basic knowledge of AISC standards and welding symbols (AWS).
• Familiarity with document management and quality control procedures.
• Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines on multiple small tasks.

Reporting Relationship

Reports directly to the Senior Structural Drafter/Detailing Manager and works collaboratively under supervision with senior drafters, structural engineers, project managers, and fabrication shop personnel.

Pay: From $18.00 per hour
