Position Summary
The Mechanical Design Engineer, PE will be responsible for developing 3D models, engineering drawings, fabrication packages, and engineering analyses for pressure vessels, storage tanks, and related equipment. The successful candidate will utilize SolidWorks and finite element analysis (FEA) tools to create practical, code-compliant designs that meet client requirements and fabrication needs.
Responsibilities
- Create detailed 3D models and fabrication drawings using SolidWorks.
- Develop complete manufacturing and fabrication packages including:
- Bills of Material (BOMs)
- Weld maps
- Nozzle schedules
- Assembly drawings
- Detail drawings
- Perform finite element analysis (FEA) to validate designs under structural, pressure, thermal, and operational loading conditions.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and client specifications.
- Review design requirements and translate concepts into fabrication-ready engineering packages.
- Apply Professional Engineer seal to drawings and engineering calculations as required.
- Coordinate directly with clients, fabricators, and project stakeholders to resolve technical questions.
- Revise designs based on customer feedback, fabrication requirements, or code interpretations.
- Maintain project documentation, drawing revisions, and engineering records.
- Assist with the continuous improvement of drafting standards, engineering templates, and internal processes.
What Success Looks Like
During your first 6-12 months, you will:
- Produce fabrication-ready SolidWorks drawing packages with increasing independence.
- Perform engineering analyses supporting pressure vessel and tank designs.
- Build working knowledge of ASME Section VIII and applicable API standards.
- Effectively communicate with clients and fabricators regarding technical requirements.
- Become a trusted contributor capable of managing projects from design through fabrication support.
Required Qualifications
- Active Professional Engineer (PE)license in Mechanical Engineering.
- Texas PE license or ability to obtain Texas licensure in a reasonable timeframe.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Strong proficiency with SolidWorks, including:
- Parts
- Assemblies
- Detailed manufacturing drawings
- GD&T
- Experience performing finite element analysis using SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS, or similar tools.
- Ability to create accurate, organized, and fabrication-ready drawing packages.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a small-company environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Recently obtained PE license or early-career Professional Engineer.
- Experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, particularly Section VIII.
- Experience with API 650, API 620, or other storage tank standards.
- Direct experience designing pressure vessels, storage tanks, or similar fabricated equipment.
- Experience using Compress software.
- Knowledge of welding processes, materials, and fabrication practices.
- Familiarity with manufacturing and shop drawing requirements.
