About the role

The project integrates environmental modeling, data sciences, health science, and political economy to examine how global price fluctuations influence artisanal and small-scale gold mining, mercury emissions, and socio-economic outcomes. The research will combine machine learning, Earth system modeling, and socio-economic analysis to quantify the environmental and economic analysis to quantify the environmental and economic impacts of mercury pollution and evaluate policy strategies to reduce emissions and improve community well-being


Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Economics, Public Policy, Data Science, or related discipline
  • Experience with quantitative modleing, data analysis, or machine learning
  • Strong programming skills ( e.g. FORTRAN, Python, R, MATLAB, or similar)
  • Demonstratred ability to conducut independent research and publish scholarly work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Earth system models, atmospheric, or environmental transport modeling, or integrated assessment modeling
  • Familiarity with environmental health or socio-economic data analysis
  • Interest in interdisciplinaty research linking enivronmental science and public policy

  • Develop and apply data-driven and machine learning models to quantify relationships betwen ASGM mercury emissions and socio-economic drivers such as gold prices, employment, and poverty indicators
  • Contribute to Earth system modeling of mercury transport, deposition, and environmental redistribution, linking emissions to human exposure pathways.
  • Integrate environmental, epidemological, and economic datasets to quantify health and economic impacts of mercury exposure
  • Evaluate policy interventions and edevelopment strategies aimed at reducing mercury emissions and breaking poverty traps in mining communities
  • lead and contribute to peer-reviewed publicationos and conference presentations
  • Participate in the intelletural community of the Murphy Institute by attending seminars, workshiops, and interdisciplinary events.
