About the role

SPIRAC® is a globally recognized engineering firm specializing in custom-built inlet works and sludge handling solutions. Since 1966, SPIRAC has pioneered shaftless spiral conveyor technology and continues to set industry benchmarks with innovative engineering solutions.

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Project Engineering/Designer to join our dynamic team. The Project Engineer/Designer will support and execute engineering and project delivery tasks for wastewater conveyance systems and industrial conveyor equipment (screw conveyors) used in wastewater/sludge/solids handling applications. The ideal candidate bridges detailed technical engineering, project coordination, and customer interface — working from concept through design, fabrication, start-up, and commissioning.

Position Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Interpret customer requirements and specifications for wastewater conveyance or solids-handling conveyor systems; translate into engineering deliverables (drawings, specs, layouts, general arrangement).
  • Perform engineering calculations, selection of equipment (motors, drives, conveyance components), and material sizing (structural supports, load calculations, drive sizing) for conveyor systems.
  • Review and approve equipment/submittal drawings, vendor proposals, shop drawings, and fabrication documents.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing/fabrication, purchasing, field installation, and commissioning teams to ensure project milestones are met and quality expectations are achieved.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements relevant to wastewater systems (e.g., hydraulic conveyance, solids handling, environmental/municipal standards) and conveyor design codes.
  • Maintain project documentation (engineering files, change logs, factory test reports) and ensure proper handover for operation/maintenance.
  • Support continuous improvement: contribute to standardization of design practices, lessons learned, cost reduction initiatives, and adoption of new technologies or methods.

Competencies:

  • Positive team player.
  • Proactive and willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, oral and written.
  • Ability to multitask and be results-driven.
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Troubleshooting and analytical skills.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil, Environmental or related Engineering discipline.

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years of engineering experience in wastewater systems, conveyance systems, or industrial conveyor equipment.
  • Experience with design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of industrial conveyors or wastewater conveyance systems (e.g., pipelines, pumps, solids handling conveyors).
  • Prior project engineering or project management experience, preferably interacting with customers and managing multi-disciplinary teams.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in CAD software (Inventor, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
  • Experience in conveyor load calculations, motor/drive sizing, and material handling design.
  • Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., MS Project), MS Office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment/conveyance principles (hydraulics, solids handling, pipelines, pumps) is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to customer sites, fabrication shops, and field installations as needed (e.g., 10–30% travel).

Personal Attributes

  • Detail-oriented and highly organized; able to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, able to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Customer-focused, with strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships.
  • Adaptable and comfortable working in a dynamic project environment with changing priorities.
  • Commitment to quality and continuous improvement.

Physical / Work Environment

  • Office work combined with field visits: fabrication shops, wastewater plants, construction sites.
  • May require lifting of moderate weights, climbing ladders, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Travel and site visits may involve varying weather and working conditions.
