Senior Control Systems Engineer - Safety Critical Systems (SCADA/BMS)

About the Role We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineer to support the delivery of complex control system projects across the rail sector. This is a technically focused role involving the design, development, testing and commissioning of engineering solutions, while working closely with clients, suppliers and internal engineering teams.

The successful candidate will have strong experience within BMS and SCADA systems, ideally gained within the rail industry or another safety-critical environment, with the ability to support projects through the full engineering lifecycle.

You will be responsible for producing technical solutions, managing engineering interfaces, supporting project delivery and ensuring all designs meet customer requirements, safety standards and industry regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and deliver engineering solutions for rail control systems, including SCADA, BMS, SISS and associated technologies.
• Produce technical specifications, drawings, documentation and engineering reports.
• Support the full project lifecycle including design, installation, testing and commissioning activities.
• Manage technical interfaces between clients, suppliers and internal engineering teams.
• Provide technical support to customers and project teams throughout delivery.
• Review technical specifications, designs and documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements.
• Investigate technical issues during installation and commissioning, implementing corrective actions where required.
• Support project managers with progress reporting, engineering delivery and technical risks.
• Carry out site surveys, inspections and commissioning activities as required.
• Ensure compliance with relevant rail, safety, quality and environmental standards.
• Assist with technical reviews, audits and continuous improvement activities.
• Support bid preparation, quotations and technical proposals.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Previous experience working within the rail industry or another safety-critical engineering environment.
• Strong knowledge and practical experience with SCADA and BMS systems.
• Experience delivering control system engineering projects from design through to testing and commissioning.
• Understanding of safety standards, engineering processes and regulated environments.
• Experience working with electrical/control system designs, schematics and technical drawings.
• Ability to interpret engineering documentation and produce clear technical reports.
• Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and engineering teams.
• Engineering qualification such as HNC, HND, BEng or equivalent experience.

Desirable Experience

• Experience with rail standards including Network Rail processes, CDM regulations and safety procedures.
• Functional Safety knowledge (TÜV certification desirable).
• Experience with PLC/control platforms such as:
  • SilworX
  • GX Works
  • GOT HMI
  • ICONICS
• Experience with programming/configuration using:
  • C
  • Assembler
  • Visual Basic / scripting macros
• Knowledge of CAD, Visio and engineering design tools.
