In this role, you'll:
Reporting to the Associate Director Design, The Senior Manager Design will be to lead all aspects of design development across the project, providing strategic oversight, expert advice, and governance for architecture, urban design, engineering, landscape, and technical design disciplines associated with transport infrastructure and related corridors and precincts.

You will be responsible for preparing, managing, and reviewing the project designs, ensuring all designs and specifications are of the highest quality, align with Sydney Metro requirements, customer and transport product requirements, integrate effectively with other transport modes, incorporate best-practice master planning principles, support project development workstreams, and comply with contractual obligations.

You will lead the management and delivery of design activities across Metro assets, corridors, and precincts, and ensuring design outcomes contribute to a safe, functional, sustainable, and integrated transport network.

Key accountabilities include:
  • Provide strategic design leadership and governance across stations, corridors and precincts by reviewing, advising, challenging and assuring design outcomes to ensure alignment with customer requirements, transport product objectives, operational needs and local infrastructure integration.
  • Drive fit-for-purpose, compliant and future-ready design solutions by ensuring all designs meet planning, statutory, legislative, operational, accessibility and engineering requirements while delivering safe, sustainable and customer-focused outcomes.
  • Lead multidisciplinary design excellence and technical assurance by providing specialist expertise across architecture, urban design, industrial design, engineering and land use planning to optimise project performance and achieve best-practice outcomes.
  • Champion integrated place-based planning and network outcomes by ensuring transport infrastructure aligns with existing and future land use, adjoining developments, interchange requirements and urban design principles that enhance community connectivity and customer experience.
  • Promote innovation, sustainability and continuous improvement by identifying and embedding best-practice design and master-planning principles, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, facilitating knowledge sharing and ensuring environmental considerations are incorporated throughout project development.

About you

You will bring a strong understanding of the breadth of project and business activities within a complex, evolving infrastructure and construction environment, where risks, priorities and stakeholder expectations are continually changing. You will effectively navigate the sensitivities of operating within a government service setting, ensuring that all activities are underpinned by best practice, robust governance and sound decision-making that can withstand significant public and stakeholder scrutiny.

You will maintain a thorough knowledge of design and compliance, of current and emerging policy, regulatory requirements, industry trends and Transport for NSW standards, applying this insight to support project outcomes and organisational objectives. Working closely with senior stakeholders, you will proactively escalate and manage issues, provide strategic advice, deliver timely updates on key projects and priorities, and contribute to planning, policy development and informed decision-making.

You will leverage your demonstrated experience in risk identification, assessment and mitigation, alongside strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, to interpret complex and sensitive information, prepare high-quality reports and make balanced, evidence-based decisions that support successful project delivery.
