About the role
About the Role
Oblak Solutions is seeking an experienced engineer for a remote contract engagement supporting one of our clients.
This is a hands-on infrastructure-as-code role focused heavily on AWS and Terraform. The engineer will help modernize and reorganize an existing Terraform environment, including migrating infrastructure between Terraform repositories, refactoring existing configurations, and moving resources into reusable custom modules.
The ideal candidate has advanced, real-world Terraform expertise and understands how to safely restructure mature infrastructure code without disrupting existing AWS environments. This is not an entry-level DevOps role. We are looking for someone who can assess an existing Terraform implementation, identify risks and dependencies, recommend an effective migration strategy, and execute the work.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess the client’s existing Terraform repositories, modules, state files, and deployment processes.
- Develop and execute a strategy for migrating Terraform configurations from one repository structure to another.
- Refactor existing Terraform code into reusable, maintainable custom modules.
- Safely migrate existing AWS resources without unnecessary recreation or service disruption.
- Manage Terraform state operations, including resource imports, state moves, remote state dependencies, and backend configuration.
- Establish standards for module structure, versioning, naming, documentation, and reuse.
- Identify tightly coupled resources, dependencies, configuration drift, and migration risks.
- Improve Terraform workflows across development, testing, validation, and deployment.
- Integrate Terraform changes with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
- Troubleshoot complex Terraform plans, provider behavior, state conflicts, and AWS infrastructure issues.
- Partner with cloud, application, security, and engineering teams throughout the migration.
- Document the new repository and module architecture and provide knowledge transfer to the client’s team.
Required Qualifications
- Deep, hands-on expertise with Terraform in production environments.
- Strong experience designing and maintaining reusable Terraform modules.
- Demonstrated experience reorganizing, refactoring, or migrating large Terraform codebases.
- Experience migrating Terraform-managed resources between repositories, modules, or state files.
- Advanced knowledge of Terraform state management, including:
- terraform import
- terraform state mv
- moved blocks
- Remote state and backend configuration
- State locking
- Resource addressing
- Module refactoring
- Provider and module versioning
- Strong experience building and managing infrastructure in Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- Understanding of AWS networking, IAM, compute, storage, security, and managed services.
- Experience with Git, pull-request workflows, code review, and branching strategies.
- Experience incorporating Terraform into CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work through complex infrastructure dependencies.
- Ability to communicate technical risks, recommendations, and migration plans clearly.
- Ability to work independently in a remote consulting environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Terraform Cloud or Terraform Enterprise.
- Experience with tools such as Atlantis and GitHub Actions.
- Experience with infrastructure security scanning or policy-as-code tools.
- Experience supporting highly regulated, security-conscious, or enterprise AWS environments.
- AWS or HashiCorp certifications.
- Experience with Kubernetes or Amazon EKS is helpful but not required.
What Success Looks Like
- Existing Terraform-managed infrastructure is migrated safely and predictably.
- Terraform repositories have a clear, scalable structure.
- Repetitive configurations are replaced with well-designed custom modules.
- State is handled correctly, with minimal resource recreation or downtime.
- CI/CD and code-review workflows are reliable and well documented.
- The client’s engineering team can confidently maintain and extend the new platform.
