Location: Manchester 3 days in office, 2 days remote

Salary: From £37,910

Purpose of the role:

This role focuses on creating, maintaining, and evolving ii's design ecosystem to deliver consistent, accessible, and high-quality customer experiences.

Working closely with the Design System Lead and the Design System and Architecture (DAS) team, you will help deliver the design system strategy and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the system. The role requires close collaboration with UX, research, engineering, brand, content design, and accessibility teams to ensure the system meets the needs of products, users, and contributors.

Key responsibilities

Design System delivery and evolution

  • Partner with the Design System Lead and DAS team to deliver the design system strategy and roadmap.
  • Contribute to the evolution of system foundations, components, patterns, and documentation.
  • Balance immediate product requirements with the long-term health and scalability of the system.
  • Support governance processes and encourage effective contribution and adoption.

Asset libraries

  • Create, maintain, and refine reusable components and patterns within a robust asset library.
  • Apply systems thinking to component hierarchy, composition, and dependencies.
  • Maintain design tokens across colour, typography, spacing, motion, and other foundational elements.
  • Ensure visual consistency across components, patterns, templates, and foundations.
  • Ensure components are scalable, accessible, responsive, and support multiple use cases.
  • Maintain naming conventions, variants, states, and versioning standards.

Cross-functional collaboration

  • Work closely with UX, research, engineering, brand, content design, and accessibility teams to create reusable, high-quality solutions.
  • Partner with developers to ensure alignment between design assets and coded components.
  • Gather feedback from stakeholders and product teams to inform continuous improvement.
  • Participate in workshops, reviews, and collaborative problem-solving activities.

Documentation and quality

  • Produce and maintain clear guidance for components, patterns, and usage.
  • Document behaviours, variants, states, and interaction principles.
  • Contribute to maintaining consistency, quality, accessibility, and usability across the ecosystem.
  • Maintain visual design standards across typography, colour, iconography, spacing, motion, and interaction patterns.

Requirements

Required experience and skills

Core UI design

  • 3–5 years' experience in UI, product, or digital design.
  • Strong visual design fundamentals, including layout, typography, colour, spacing, and interaction design.
  • Proficiency with Figma and component-based workflows.
  • Experience designing responsive experiences across platforms and devices.

Design Systems

  • Proven experience creating and maintaining component libraries and design systems.
  • Strong understanding of component hierarchy, composition, and dependency management.
  • Experience working with design tokens and foundational design principles.
  • Confidence managing complex asset libraries and maintaining consistency across products.
  • Experience documenting components, patterns, and usage guidelines.
  • Ability to think systematically and understand the wider impact of design decisions.

Collaboration and quality

  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate design rationale.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.
  • Understanding of implementation considerations and quality assurance processes.

Nice to have

  • Experience with design-to-code and MCP workflows.
  • Familiarity with Storybook and Zeroheight.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and component-based development frameworks.
  • Experience contributing to design system governance.
  • Experience supporting multi-brand or multi-platform ecosystems.
